Selection of films for the 5th Rivne International Film Festival

The 5th Rivne International Film Festival Dream City will be held in Rivne on June 5-8, 2024.

The tasks of the 5th Rivne International Film Festival Dream City are:
•    to present the best examples of Ukrainian and foreign cinematography.
•    to develop cultural connections between the regions of Ukraine and beyond.
•    to promote the integration of Ukraine into the European and world cultural space through film art.
•    to help the people of Ukraine in strengthen resistance to the aggressor and strengthen the morale of Ukrainians.
•    to inform the world community about the catastrophic consequences of the war in Ukraine on the ecology.
•    analysis of the influence of modern technologies on people's lives through cinema.

The program of the film festival includes the screening of Ukrainian and foreign films, as well as various related events.

Nominations of the competition program:
• Length of feature films
• Short feature films
• Short documentaries Wounded Earth (films on the environmental problems caused by wars).

You can submit a film for participation in the selection for the competitive program of the film festival through the online form.

Main festival events:
June 5 – opening of the film festival and screening of films in the nomination short documentaries Wounded Earth.
June 6-7 – screenings of feature-length and short feature films within the competition program.
June 8 - closing of the film festival.

Related events (the list is open and may be expanded): out-of-competition film screening about the impact of artificial intelligence on the spheres of life; an industrial session (a round table) with the participation of film artists and IT specialists on the possibilities of using artificial intelligence in film production.

The festival is financed by the European Union according to the EU4Culture project implemented by the Goethe-Institut (lead), Czech Centers, Danish Cultural Institute, and Institut Français de Géorgie.

About the RIFF

The Rivne International Film Festival Dream City, launched in 2016 in Rivne, took place annually in 2016-2019. The initiators and founders of the film festival are director, screenwriter, member of the Ukrainian Film Academy Viktor Bulyha, vice-president of the Ukrainian Marketing Association Oleksandr Gladunov, and entrepreneur, scientist, and Doctor of Philosophy Serhii Paladiichuk.

Due to COVID-19 and the beginning of Russian large-scale military aggression on the territory of Ukraine, the film festival Dream City was not held in 2020-2023.

Partners and sponsors of the event in different years: Rivne City Council, Rivne Regional State Administration, Ukrainian State Film Agency, Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, and private sponsors. Information sponsors: Espresso.TV, Rytm TV. In general, the events of the film festival over four years (competition and non-competition film screenings, accompanying events) were visited by about 15,000 people.

For four years, more than 1,250 applications from 60 countries were submitted for participation in competitive screenings, and more than 240 films were selected for competitive viewing.

During 2016-2019, the jury included well-known film artists, figures of culture and Ukrainian cinema, in particular, theatre and film actor, People's Artist of Ukraine Bohdan Beniuk; film actress, laureate of the First National Film Award "Zolota Dzyga" Rymma Ziubina; film expert, editor-in-chief of the Kinokolo and "Screenplay Workshop" websites Volodymyr Voitenko; producer, artist Volodymyr Filipov; director Yurii Kovalov; screenwriter, Chairman of the Screenwriters' Guild of Ukraine Andrii Babik; Olesia Anastasieva, journalist, author and TV presenter; film expert, screenwriter Yurii Soroka and others.

The following films took the Grand Prix: 2016 – "Mousse" by John Hellberg (Sweden); 2017 – "War of Chimeras" by Anastasiia and Mariia Starozhytski (Ukraine); 2018 – "Myth" by Leonid Kanter and Ivan Yasnii (Ukraine); 2019 – The Wind Phone by Kristen Gervek (USA).

The film festival became a communication platform for meetings and creative contacts of filmmakers from Ukraine and abroad.
